July 13 + here, 2017
neighbourhood walks (4 routes), live-mixed pre-recorded and audience recorded audio, 2 website projections
approx 20 minutes
Program Note
July 13 + here is my response to the title of the series, PS: We Are All Here. Where is here? How does “here” create our ideas of self and how we relate to others?
In this work I offer a context for your consideration of “here”, zooming from the inside of your body, to the neighbourhood, Earth and space. The audio you will hear in the parking lot is from The Golden Record, a 12-inch gold-plated copper disk containing sounds selected to portray life on Earth, placed aboard the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft launched in 1977 and still in space. I invite you to contribute to the audio mix by recording during the neighbourhood walks. The video includes a NASA live stream of Earth from space and an image of the Pia Bouman Scotiabank Theatre neighbourhood from Google Earth.
Instructions to participants
– Walk in silence
– While walking, focus on some aspect of the inside of your body – cells, bones, tissue, organs, fluids, etc.
– You are invited to record sounds you hear on the walk or comments on your experience with your phone and play them back later in the parking lot at the microphone.
