Boat, Thinking (unrealized garden sculpture, 2000)

Boat, Thinking revisedA city park provides a respite for body and spirit and is an island in a sea of commerce. The proposed work, Boat, Thinking, is intended as a fransformative metaphor and tool for the viewer to trave to a reflective space. It is grounded in natural elements of the site – air and earth.

The work is a 6 ounce Dacron western lug rig sail rigged to a 25 foot, round, tapered, aluminum mast secured 3 feet below ground level, bolted. A drawing of a human brain is painted on the sail. Being a sail, it will fill with wind and its movement will reflect the day’s weather. Being white, it will act as a shadow screen, reflecting its environment, by chance at day and by lights at night.

proposed to Rodman Hall Arts Centre and Toronto Sculpture Garden
